The ongoing cost of the private finance initiative was laid bare by the Institute for Public Policy Research, while the government published a Public Health England report on prescribing for drugs used to treat anxiety, insomnia, nerve damage, chronic pain and depression.

Although the newspapers used the report to claim that England has become “a nation of pill poppers” the report emphasises the links between prescribing and deprivation.
