Snow fell over many parts of Britain, putting the NHS under further pressure. As the weather worsened, the annual British Social Attitudes Survey reported that satisfaction with health services is at its lowest level for 30 years, with money and staffing particular concerns. Think-tanks and opposition politicians urged the government to put more money into the service to increase capacity. Health secretary Jeremy Hunt found £75 million for e-prescribing, as part of a push on reducing drug medication errors. E-prescribing was a focus of the two tech funds launched in 2013 and 2014, but the money went on other systems and ‘winter pressures.’ So a call from new chief clinical information officer Simon Eccles for the NHS to deliver on its existing IT programmes, and not be distracted by “new and shiny things” may have been timely.
