As 2017 drew to a close, NHS England started its winter flu and cold alerts amid further signs of strain in the health service in England and Scotland, where the largest health board, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, went into the red for the first time. Former health minister Lord Ara Darzi was recruited by the IPPR think-tank to conduct a review of the NHS in time for its 70th anniversary next July. NHS England urged trusts to adopt the NEWS score for detecting sepsis, and plans for a new round of global digital exemplars, this time focused on local integration and analysis projects, were unveiled.
