Sir Michael Marmot revisited his landmark study of health inequality in England and found that after ten-years of austerity life expectancy has stalled while years spent in ill health have increased and so has inequality between socio-economic groups and regions.
The Health Foundation, which funded the work, called for a significant package of government action in policy areas known to impact on health; but the Institute for Fiscal Studies warned in another report that chancellor Rishi Sunak will have difficult choices to deliver the government’s election promises in his first Budget.
