As its 70th anniversary draws closer, the first of a number of reports on the NHS’ future predicted that the health and social care system will need another £60 billion a year by 2030 – on top of reform to boost annual efficiency to 1.1%. The author of the IPPR report, Ara Darzi, Professor the Lord Darzi or Denham, argued the money could be found from tax if the government recognised health as an investment. Meanwhile, the King’s Fund focused on a specific cost pressure facing the NHS – medicines. Drug costs are rising by 5% a year and 12% in hospitals. NHS England and NHS Improvement issued a patient safety alert, setting out specific steps that trusts should take to detect deteriorating patients. And Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust announced that it would be moving electronic patient record supplier.
