The government got mixed headlines for its re-jig of the ’40 New Hospitals Programme’ last week, when it both admitted that it wouldn’t meet its 2030 deadline by moving eight projects beyond this date, and claimed that it would meet, because three mental health projects and five hospitals with collapsing concrete roofs and ceilings have been added.

But this week it emerged that 123 projects that had been invited to apply for the final wave of the programme had been rejected: leaving an awful lot of trusts with urgent plans and no way of funding them.
